A horizontal hive is a single-story beehive that's longer in length than it is height. Sometimes it's referred to as a "long hive." Many beekeepers gravitate towards horizontal hives because they require less heavy lifting. Also, you have access to all the frames at once, and the hive is easier to inspect because it stands at waist level.

There are 3 types of horizontal hives - the top bar hive, the horizontal/long Langstroth hive, and the Layens hive. Top Bar Hive. Top bar hives use bars that are placed upon the top of the box for the bees to build their comb upon. This design allows the bees to build a natural comb structure, as the queen is allowed to move around the hive.

The Horizontal Langstroth Hive is a variation of the popular Langstroth Hive design. Instead of stacking boxes vertically like a traditional Langstroth, this design features a single long box to house the frames horizontally. This approach provides some of the benefits of a horizontal hive, like reducing heavy lifting and providing easier.

The idea is simple: cover the entire length of your horizontal Langstroth hive with narrow cover boards, 3/8" (bee space) above the frames. (See Figure 107 in de Layens' book .) The cover boards are ripped from "one-by" stock. I like making them about 2-5/8" wide. Do not make them too wide: they will warp.

However, horizontal hives might require more space in your apiary. In terms of the number of frames, horizontal hives can hold a minimum of 24 frames and up to 32. Traditional Langstroth hives typically hold 8 or 10 frames per box and can be increased in height by adding more boxes.

Step 3: Flip your box back upside up, and take it to the open end of your Top-Bar Hive, which should have entrances drilled at the bottom end, near the end piece you removed. Touch a long side of the Langstroth box to the end of the Top-Bar Hive and center it around the opening, then align the top of that long side of your Lang box on both.
